A Virtual Baby Shower

My Bangkok baby shower was not the shower that I had envisioned before I went abroad and got pregnant.

My mom and one of my best friends back home got together to plan my baby shower. Invitations were mailed out; RSVPs were made. All the guests gathered for drinks and food. A roaring good time was had by all.

And I wasn’t even there.

Well physically at least. In my friend’s dining room, some 12,055 kilometers away, my face was being projected onto her patio door curtains via Skype. My friend set up her laptop, someone borrowed a projector from somewhere and so I had a baby shower with all my old childhood friends back in Canada.

We did everything you’re supposed to do at a shower. We played ‘guess how big the belly is’, we opened gifts, we laughed and people shared their advice. Even though I sat alone in my bedroom, I couldn’t have felt more loved.

Three hours later, it was time to close the computer and remember that distance doesn’t need to be a barrier.

My name is Jodie. I'm a 38 year old Canadian working and living in Bangkok, Thailand. My husband and I are both international teachers - though I'm taking this year off to be a full-time mom.

When we're not busy with other people's kids, we try our hand at raising our own very curious nearly four year old son and his 9 and half month old brother. When it comes to parenting, like most of us, I’m making a lot of it up as I go along .

It was a fun evening/morning! It was the best way we could think of to allow you a shower that let you know your friends and family were still thinking about you, even though you were so far away! The added bonus was your mom was going and able to take all the presents a couple of weeks later!
