Infertility is a condition in which a woman is unable to get pregnant after one year of having sexual intercourse without using birth control.

What are the causes of infertility?

  • Infertility can occur in both men and women
  • 40-50% of cases are because of the female
  • 30-40% of cases are because of the male
  • 5-10% of cases are because of both the female and male

Therefore, it is important to examine both the male and female partner to determine the exact cause.

How to treat infertility

Treatment courses for infertility vary, depending on the nature of the condition for each couple. The following are some of the conditions and available treatments:

Abnormalities in oviducts
Treatment: Surgery and assisted reproductive technologies (e.g. IVF, ICSI)

Malfunctions of ovary
Treatment: Ovulation induction by oral medication or hormonal injection and assisted reproductive technologies

Treatment: Surgery, hormonal treatment, and assisted reproductive technologies

Abnormalities of sperm
Treatment: Consultation, vitamin supplements, intrauterine insemination (IUI), and assisted reproductive technologies

Unknown causes
Treatment: Consultation, ovarian stimulation by oral medication or hormonal, intracytoplasmic sperm injection, assisted reproductive technologies, injection

Infertility Treatments

Intrauterine Insemination (IUI)

IUI is a procedure in which laboratory-prepared, strong sperms are directly placed in a woman’s uterus on the day of ovulation.
Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART)

ART is a procedure that eggs we removed from a woman’s ovary and fertilized in laboratory. As ART has been continuously developed, the rate of success cases for this type of treatment have increased. There are many techniques of ART including the following:

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF)
IVF is a procedure of fertilization by combining a woman’s egg with a man’s sperm in a laboratory dish before they are transferred back into the woman’s uterus.

Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT)
GIFT is a procedure in which a woman’s eggs mixed with sperm and then injected into the woman’s fallopian tube.

Intracytoplastic Sperm Injection (ICSI)
ICIS is the procedure in which a single sperm is injected into a woman’s egg.

Testicular Sperm Extraction (TESE)
TESE is a procedure in which a small portion of testicle tissue is taken and viable sperms are extracted

Blastocyst Culture
Blastocyst Culture is a procedure in which an embryo is cultured in a laboratory up to the blastocyst stage, and then the resulting embryo is placed in the woman’s uterus. The procedure takes about 5 days.

What are the success rates of infertility treatments?

There are many factors involved in the success of infertility treatments, namely the age of woman and the cause of infertility. On average, the success rate of ART is approximately 30–40%.

What possible risks are there from infertility treatments?

  • Ovarian Hyperstimulation Syndrome from over stimulation of the ovary with inappropriate dosage of hormonal injection
  • Multiple pregnancy
