Ask the doctor about Life with a Toddler

My baby was just born about 7 days ago. I want to know what kind of vaccine will my baby need? What should I do to keep my baby’s health good?

The newborn is usually given a 1st dose of Hepatitis B vaccine and BCG vaccine after birth. These can be found in your baby’s immunization record. The second shot will be 4 weeks later. Therefore you should check your baby’s immunization record to make sure that all required injections are given to your baby.

However there is a routine vaccination schedule which you need to follow. Click here for the details

We are moving to Thailand with a daughter of 15 months. What kind of vaccines would you reccommend. Thank you in advance for your answer.

Although there is no special requirement, the following are the recommended vaccinations for Thailand:

Vaccination for 12 months:

  • MMR
  • Japanese Encephalitis
  • Chicken Pox

Vaccination for 18 months:

  • DTap – the fourth dose (combinding Diphtheria, Pertussis and Tetanus)
  • Polio vaccine – the fourth dose
  • Hib – the fourth dose (Haemophilus Influenza)

Before vaccination, the pediatrician will check your baby’s immunization history from the vaccine book. If there is any required vaccine missing, then the pediatrician will suggest the appropriate vaccinations. Therefore please make sure to bring the vaccine book along with you.

Have a nice trip!

We are moving to Cambodia in July. Our boys (13 months and 4 years old) have not yet been vaccinated for Japanese encephalitis. Would you recommend this vaccine? We will be living in the capital of Phnom Penh but we expect to travel throughout Cambodia during our time there.

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a disease transmitted by mosquitoes. It is common in Asia and this is why a JE vaccine is recommended for every child who lives in Asia. Children must complete a series of doses of this vaccine.

Other recommended vaccinations include:

  • Hepatitis A
  • Hepatitis B
  • German measles
  • Mumps

All these vaccinations have series of doses that must be completed at various ages. If you intend to travel soon, you must visit your physician to check the vaccination history of your child.
